The Harder They Come not only served as a jump off point for the career of the now legendary Jimmy Cliff, but it single handedly brought reggae into the global scene. Before this album, reggae was a nonsense word to most Americans. Within a few months of its release it was a household term and the concepts of Rastafari were already penetrating the world's consciousness (Rivers of Babylon). Historical relevance aside, the album is simply enjoyable to listen to, with several songs now considered classics and a few that should be.
